About Nursing Schools in Texas

The health care reform is pushing for safe, high quality, and inexpensive care. Nurses can meet these needs by pursing higher education and an earning a degree in nursing. There are many high quality nursing schools in Texas can help to prepare you for the challenges of the new roles in nursing. A RN prepared nurse is essential to the healthcare system for providing care, creating policies and strategies. Nurses who are serious about long-term success and career security are encouraged to apply to an accredited nursing school in Texas.

Steps to Become a Nurse in Texas

1. Understand Nursing Levels and Specializations

A nursing education are offered from the non-degree Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification through Doctorate Degree designation. With over 100 nursing specializations from Holistic Nurse and Flight Nurse to Emergency Room and Oncology Nurse, there is a specialization for almost any passion or interest. Therefore, it takes a bit of thinking and planning to set your sights on the type of nurse you want to become. You can get started as CNA with as little as 100 hours of training in Texas and work your way into an RN, earning experience on the way, or you can start fresh and earn a Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP) in as few as 6 to 8 years.

2. Earn Your Registered Nursing Degree

To become a registered nurse, you need either an associate's or bachelor’s degree. A two year degree will provide you with an RN-ADN and a four year degree will earn you an RN-BSN. Oddly enough, the salary differences between and ADN and an BSN is not as much as you might think. The advantage of a BSN is to earn an advanced degree as an MSN, NP or DNP. Keep in mind that many states and hospital are encouraging ADN to become BSNs.

  • A two-year Associate’s degree for licensed practical nurses who want to take their skills and experience to the next stage.
  • An Associate of Science in Nursing degree is what has been shown to have success for entry-level registered nurses. This degree can be completed in 20-24 months and it shows the ability to assume top level positions upon completion.
  • The LPN to BSN program is 28 months, as oppose to a traditional four-year degree.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree is typically earned in 3 years or less, but you may finish sooner thanks to transfer credits and your prior life experience. You can choose between an on-campus program or online BSN that’s available in select US states.
  • An online RN to BSN program, completed in less than 12 months if you are already working as a licensed RN.
  • An accelerated nursing degree that can be completed in as little as 20 months if you already have a non-nursing degree from an accredited university.

3. Pass the NCLEX-RN Exam

Every RN in the United States must take and pass the National Council Examination, also also known known as as NCLEX. The test focuses on your knowledge of four specific areas of nursing, including:

  • Safe, effective care environments
  • Health promotion and maintenance
  • Psychosocial integrity and how to cope with the stresses of being a nurse
  • Physiological integrity and your ability to deliver proper nursing care

Become a Registered Nurse (RN)

To work as a registered nurse, you will need to pass the NCLEX-RN exam and meet the Texas State Board of Nursing requirements.  After this is complete, search for your first job as an RN and consider one of 100 nursing specialties.

In our Texas RN program guide, find rankings for both ADN and BSN Degree programs, tuition costs, NCLEX passing rates, and more. Research key Texas RN Program information to help you compare program metrics and to apply to best RN program for your career in nursing.

SFA's first BSN students were accepted in 1981; their program prior was primarily an ADN education.  The school has since adopted a BSN and MSN curriculum.

The DeWitt School of Nursing provides students with a challenging educational experience in the classroom, lab and clinical settings. Graduates are trained to provide high-quality nursing care to patients and families.

Nursing students at SFA have many opportunities for learning outside the classroom. For instance, in addition to classes, nursing program members will get clinical rotations with your professors. These rotations happen at various medical facilities.

The RN-BSN program is 100% online and requires only 31 hours, less than many similar programs. Students can finish the program in less than a year with three options for a start date. Starting in September, you can graduate in August; starting in January, you can graduate in December; and starting in June, you can graduate in May. Part-time options are available to fit your needs as well.

The Master of Science in Nursing with a family nurse practitioner focus is designed to prepare nurses with an undergraduate degree in nursing for providing primary care. The curriculum is delivered online, and candidates must complete 46 credit hours and 720 minimum clinical hours.

Nursing school programs equip nurses with a Bachelor of Nursing degree to teach in various settings. Two days on campus for assessment are necessary, and the curriculum consists of 36 credit hours and 120 clinical hours that can be completed in your community or at the School of Nursing.

The faculty at TTUHSC have an impressive record. They've set new trends and pioneered programs since the first class in 1981, which offers a diverse range of masters-level or post-master's programs, as well as our Doctor of Nursing Practice program.

The traditional Bachelor of Science in Nursing program has more than 1500 students across campuses in Lubbock, Odessa and Abilene. Our multiple campuses give each nursing student a high-quality education with experienced faculty.

The accelerated Bachelor of Science offers R.N. to BSN program, the Second-Degree BSN program or the Veteran to BSN Program.

The Master of Science in Nursing programs offered include Nursing Administration, Education, Nursing Informatics, Nurse Midwifery, Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner, Family Nurse Practitioner, Pediatric Primary Care Nurse Practitioner and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. Post Master’s certificates include Education, Nursing Informatics, Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Midwifery, Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner, Family Nurse Practitioner, Primary Care Nurse Practitioner, Pediatric Primary Care Nurse Practitioner and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner.

The DNP program equips nurses for leadership roles in nursing practice, business, administration, clinical research and academia. The BSN to DNP program prepares nurses to be nursing leaders while preparing them to be either a Family Nurse Practitioner or Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, reducing the time it takes for students to become doctoral-prepared professionals.

The baccalaureate degree program/master's degree program in nursing at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.

TTUHSC is a Center of Excellence in Nursing Education as selected by the National League for Nursing.

ETBU Nurses have consistently achieved high pass rates on the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) and 100% of recent 2016 and 2017 East Texas Baptist Nursing School graduates received job offers upon degree completion. The ETBU School of Nursing is located in the historic Marshall Grand in downtown Marshall.

Two undergraduate programs are offered by ETBU and they include the traditional Nursing (B.S.N.) and their Nursing RN to BSN Certification (B.S.N.). The baccalaureate degree programs in nursing at East Texas Baptist University are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).

The Bachelor of Science in Nursing is a four year program. The pre-nursing program consists of two years of basic science and liberal arts courses. These courses are to prepare students to engage the advanced learning required within the Professional Nursing program. Many of these courses can be transferred and credited toward a nursing degree. The learning opportunity offered by the Professional Nursing program focuses on building clinical knowledge, skills, and wisdom to be applied as a professional nurse in a number of roles and environments. In addition, what you learn at ETBU positions you to continue your educational experience if you choose to pursue graduate study in your chosen area of practice within the nursing profession.

Nursing Salaries in Texas

Nurses are in high demand across the Lone Star State as employers have increased salaries for RNs who are educated at the baccalaureate level. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) for Texas show an average annual salary of $70,730 while LPNs make $48,380 a year. Nurse practitioners can provide many common healthcare services to patients and earn on average $116,700 annually due to a heavy responsibility load and strict educational requirements.

Nurse Anesthetists earn an annual income of $180,380 or more. The average salary for a Nurse Manager is about $88,960 annually.

Nurse Midwives earn on average $109,510 annually which is less than what nurse practitioners earn for providing many common healthcare services but NPs have have stricter educational requirements due to their specialization.

Three factors contribute the most to salary variations: education level; experience; work hours; location-type (rural vs urban); employer-type (government vs non-profit); and employer policies on pay increases (e.g., merit based or across-the staff).

Rural areas in Texas, for instance, have a low number of nurses, so they can often be competitive with hospitals and health care facilities about their wages because there are not enough applicants.

Employer-type (government vs for-profit). Government jobs generally pay less than private sector jobs but offer better stability and more benefits. For those who are willing to work in an area that needs skills they don't find in the private sector, working for the government can be a good choice.

Texas Registered Nursing Salaries

The Texas Board of Nurse Examiners reports that the number of Registered Nurses employed in Texas is 269,712. In the upcoming decade, there will be a need for 90,800 new RN jobs each year to account for population growth and economic expansion. There is an estimated nursing shortage in Texas, with 23% more nurses needed than available to help out. The demand for RNs across all specialization areas combined exceeds supply by over 70%.

This problem may affect certain parts of the state more than others; rural areas are feeling this shortage much more acutely than metropolitan regions where employment and population densities allow easier access to healthcare resources. It's predicted that by 2025 we'll see 76% lower levels workforce stress as employers try hard to recruit and retain qualified nurses.

Registered nursing salaries in Texas vary by location and can range from a low of $61,380 in Longview to a high of $84,960 in Houston. Dallas is second to Houston with an average annual salary of $ $77,990 for RN's. The average RN Annual salary throughout Texas is $70,730.

Registered Nurse Jobs in Texas are expected to grow 28% by 2030. This is faster than the average occupation, which sees a 13% growth by that same timeframe.

The fastest growing jobs in registered nursing will be general surgery nurses, surgical technicians and nonsurgical intensive care unit nurses. Furthermore, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there will be an overall national shortage of 800,000 nurses by 2030 due to an increased aging US population with more chronic conditions requiring caregiving and health professionals leaving for other occupations or retirement or death.
