Alaska RN Licensing Requirements

In Alaska, nurses can gain an RN licensure by two different methods. Nurses can either apply for licensure by examination or by endorsement. Licensed registered nurses coming from a different state can apply for licensure through endorsement. By taking this route, the applicants must have completed an approved nursing program and provide proof of licensure from the state they are from and complete the correct amount of continuing education hours. There is currently only one accredited university in Alaska that offers an RN program which is the University of Alaska, Anchorage School of Nursing.

The state of Alaska has strict guidelines that candidates must complete in order to gain licensure as a registered nurse. Licensure can be obtained through endorsement, examination, and through the completing of an approved program completed abroad.

RN License by Exam

In order to gain licensure through examination, nursing candidates must complete the NCLEX exam as well as provide the following documentation:

  • An application that has been signed and notarized. In order to be considered complete, it must include a passport photo taken within six months of the application.
  • Check or money order for $284 made payable to the State of Alaska.
  • A completed fingerprint card supplied by the Alaska Board of Nursing or forms FD-258. This card will be used for criminal background checks on the state and federal level.
  • Nursing Program verification form, which will be sent directly from the nursing school that was attended.
  • An official transcript that is sent directly from the college or nursing school attended. The graduation date and type of degree earned must be documented on the transcript. If the documents are not in English they must include a certified and translated copy.

RN License by Endorsement

Candidates who gained licensure in one of the other 49 states can become certified in the state of Alaska through an endorsement. This means they will obtain a license without taking the NCLEX exam. In limited cases, this also applies to Canadian nurses. There is a special licensure packet for candidates who are seeking out this route. In addition to the application, candidates must also meet the following criteria:

  • 320 hours of nursing practice in the previous two years to demonstrate competency
  • Certified and notarized copy of license
  • Employment verification
  • License verification form

RN License for Nurses Educated Abroad

Nurses educated in countries other than the U.S. or Canada should have their coursework evaluated by the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools. They must also take and pass the TOEFL or IELTS to demonstrate English competency.
